Marriotts Warehouse, built in the early 1500s, played a vital role in King’s Lynn’s bustling port on the River Great Ouse. It stored valuable goods like grain, wool, and salt, supporting trade routes across the North Sea and Europe.

17th and 18th Centuries: Growth and Prosperity

By the 1800s, the Industrial Revolution was transforming England, and Marriotts Warehouse adapted to meet the demands of new trade routes and goods. During this era, the warehouse supported local industries by storing coal, timber, and other industrial materials. King’s Lynn’s port remained active, but new railways and the growth of other port towns began to alter the dynamics of trade in the region.

As a venue that honours its historical roots, Marriotts Warehouse remains an enduring symbol of the town’s legacy on the waterfront.

16th Century: Origins as a Port Warehouse

Through the 1600s and 1700s, King’s Lynn continued to grow as a commercial centre. Marriotts Warehouse remained pivotal, storing goods as the town exported and imported products from around the world. It is likely that during this period, the warehouse stored not only local agricultural products but also exotic imports such as wine, spices, and textiles, reflecting England’s expanding global trade.

19th Century: Industrialisation and Local Trade

As maritime trade patterns shifted, Marriotts Warehouse saw reduced use and eventually fell into disrepair. However, recognising its historical importance, efforts to preserve and restore the building began. Later in the 20th century, Marriotts Warehouse was carefully restored, revitalising the structure while preserving its historic character. It was repurposed as a venue where locals and visitors could experience King’s Lynn’s heritage in an authentic setting.
